Sierra Hydrometeorology and Atmospheric River Experiment (SHARE)

Vanda Grubisic, Desert Research Institute, Reno, NV, USA

The goals of the planned Sierra Hydrometeorology and Atmospheric River Experiment (SHARE) are to extend results and resolve unanswered questions from recent orographic precipitation experiments (COAST, CALJET, MAP, IPEX, PACJET, IMPROVE), addressing scientific objectives that include air mass transformation, orographic effects on airflow and precipitation development, as well as the evaluation, and refinement of atmospheric, hydrologic and coupled models. Geographically, SHARE is focused on the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, with the 700 km x 700 km meso-a experimental domain extending from 300 km offshore of California to 100 km in the lee of the Sierra Nevada, and from the Tehachapi Mountains in southern California to the Trinity Mountains in northern California (Fig. 1), with the meso-gamma domain covering the American River basin in the central Sierra Nevada. The experiment is currently planned to take place during 8 weeks in January to March 2008. For more information on SHARE, contact Sandra Yuter (sandra_yuter@ncsu.edu) or David Kingsmill (David.Kingsmill@colorado.edu).
