Much of this issue of the MAP newsletter is dedicated to the recent MAP meeting which took place in the beautiful Bavarian spa town of Bad Tölz on June 29 and 30. The meeting was attended by more than 80 participants from 14 countries. The highlights included numerous interesting and stimulating scientific presentations on MAP related topics, the first formal meetings of the official MAP organizational bodies, and the weather which for once did not keep up with the MAP objectives and stayed calm and sunny throughout the meeting. In addition, the official opening ceremony for MAP included a brief speech of Thomas Gutermann (chairman IGP) and the lift-off of three weather balloons (see news report on this page), which each carried one of the letters MAP. The balloons were released by Joachim Kuettner (honorary member IGP) , Philippe Bougeault (chairman SSC), and Peter Binder (chairman CIG). The excellent organization of the Bad Tölz meeting by Hans Volkert and Roger Smith made it to become a very memorable event. Throughout the meeting there was a very friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere, and one could sense the engagement and dedication behind solving some of the outstanding scientific problems of mountain meteorology within an internationally coordinated program.
In addition to reports and extended abstracts from Bad Tölz, this newsletter also provides some pertinent information on a MAP meeting in the US, which took place along the AMS Conference on Mountain Meteorology in Breckenridge, Colorado. This well-at tended meeting aimed towards the coordination of the participation of US scientists in the Mesoscale Alpine Programme.
In the meantime, the planning of MAP is further taking shape. In 1996, there will be another MAP meeting in Austria, but MAP is also one of the official themes of the AMS conference on Mesoscale Meteorology in Reading, UK.
