Workshop on data quality control
and monitoring for MAP
Vienna, Austria
The Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP) provides the unique opportunity of using probably the worlds most dense meteororological observation system for the analysis of mesoscale phenomena and the testing of model predictions. A recent inventory shows that more than 10000 stations are being operated in an area extending from 2 to 19 deg east and 42 to 50 deg north. Collecting the data from these stations is a challenging and tedious work since the stations are operated by several dozens of institutions. Because of the big variety of station operators also some variation in measuring, processing and data quality controlling procedures is expected. People doing analyses and model testing with atmosperic data rely on their colleagues from the observational branch to manipulate mesurements into a ready-for-use form. Questions like unifing different data formats are treated by the MAP data center. But what about data quality control? The MAP design proposal addresses this issue under the chapter Observational Strategy: Operationally available networks and stations form the backbone of the observing system. These networks will be improved somewhat, for instance by increasing the quality of operational observations.... This workshop shall provide plenty of wide-ranging discussions of quality control (QC) issues. The prime goal is to share and probably create QC solutions that we can combine into a state-of-the-art QC and quality monitoring system for dense mesoscale networks in complex topography. During this workshop we intend to build the foundation for a cooperation that will likely involve participation well past this initial event.
The workshop will be held at the University of Vienna, Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics. It is organized by Prof. Reinhold Steinacker and Christian Hberli. The workshop is sponsored by the project MAP-NWS. A small conference fee of ATS 200.- will be collected at registration. If you need assistance for hotel reservation, please contact the workshop office. The workshop programme will be sent to the participants in December 1997.
Registration not later than November 21, 1997.
